This is a large oval labradroite cabochon. It contains nice play of color, known in labrodorite as labradorescence.
Labradorite is a feldspar mineral. It is an intermediate to calcic member of the plagioclase series. It is is most often found in mafic igneous rocks such as basalt, gabbro, and norite. It is also found in anorthosite, an igneous rock in which labradorite can be the most abundant mineral.The refractive index ranges from 1.559 to 1.573 and twinning is common. It often has very strong twinning (the parallel lines of color within the stone).
